History of the Watford v Sheffield United fixture

Watford prepare to entertain Sheffield United at Vicarage Road Stadium on Tuesday evening, needing to improve on a poor record between the sides. The visitors have won 8 of the 17 previous games in Hertfordshire, with the Golden Boys winning just four.

The most recent encounter between the sides at Vicarage Road Stadium took place last September.

The South Yorkshiremen arrived in Hertfordshire on the 17th of the month occupying top spot in the Coca-Cola Championship after a tremendous start to the 2005/06 campaign, whilst Watford was also enjoying a good run and unbeaten in eight.

Darius Henderson: Can he repeat his goalscoring feat of fourteen months ago?
A dramatic game ensued on a sunlit afternoon with Watford seemingly on course for a comfortable home victory when substitute, Darius Henderson, who had replaced the injured Marlon King early on, netted his second of the afternoon on 53 minutes.

However, the then table topping Blades came storming back and goals from Phil Jagielka plus a header by Paul Ilfil levelled matters, before Referee Mr. Clattenburg controversially sent off Watford defender Malkay Mackay following an altercation with the Blades' Robert Kozluk.

Reduced to ten men the Golden Boys battled manfully but an unfortunate Clarke Carlisle own goal settled the contest in favour of Neil Warnock's side.

Watford did manage to exact a measure of revenge in the return fixture in February however as a Marlon King brace sandwiched between strikes by Chris Eagles and Hameur Bouazza swept the Golden Boys to a scintillating 4-1 away success at Brammall Lane in front of the Sky TV Camera's.

Recent respective form guides

Perhaps predictably given their relevant financial resources, both clubs have found the step up in class to the top flight of English football difficult following promotion.

However, Watford has not lost in the last six home matches in all competitions, and indeed their only loss at Vicarage Road this term has been against Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United in August, but crucially only Middlesbrough have left pointless, a situation that Watford must rectify and quickly if they are to harbour realistic hopes of remaining amongst the elite.

As a result of drawing too many matches Watford remain stuck down in the relegation zone of the Barclays Premiership with a return of just 9 points from their 13 games thus far.

Robert Kozluk: Unlucky not to score on Saturday.
The away form of Sheffield United is pretty dire, and indeed they only have one goal, from former Golden Boy, Danny Webber in their away victory at Newcastle United, to show from seven road trips so far.

The Blades have always been competitive though, and in the latest defeat on their travels, a one goal loss to West Ham United on Saturday, they can count themselves extremely unlucky as Robert Kozluk's last gasp effort should not have been ruled out by referee Mr. Riley according to TV replays.

That said Sheffield United's quest for points, much like that of ourselves is becoming increasingly desperate as autumn turns to winter, one place and a point ahead of the Golden Boys with a return of 10 from their 14 games to date.

FootyMad's Prediction…

It is a close fixture to call, but I think that Watford are due a slice of good fortune and although both sides will be totally committed home advantage may just tip the balance in the Golden Boys favour. Home Win
