The Hornets striker has been suffering with a hamstring injury and Kinnear thought he may be able to persuade Watford boss Lewington to let him move to Kenilworth Road to help him gain match fitness.

But Lewington turned Kinnear down, commenting: "Joe did come in for Gayley but he's too versatile at the moment to let out. We need him here.

"We need him as part of the squad because we don't know what is around the corner.

"I would consider letting others go on loan but not Marcus. Marcus is staying here and is very important to us."
