The Millennium Stadium awaits
The automatic promotion and relegation battles in the Coca-Cola Championship may have been settled long ago, but there is still some way to go before the composition of the play-off fixtures is finally decided.

Here at the Golden Boys we thought of attempting to unravel the play-off tangle and try to ascertain whom Watford will actually be playing come early May.

The final day of the regular season is next Sunday, 30 April 2006 when Preston North End take on Leeds United at Deepdale, Sheffield United face Crystal Palace at Bramall Lane and Watford entertain Hull City at Vicarage Road.

It appears at first glance that the most likely scenario will be that the Golden Boys will face Crystal Palace, but it is by no means certain as you will see below.

Watford v Crystal Palace

Watford will play Crystal Palace should they defeat Hull City and the Eagles fail to win at already promoted Sheffield United.

A draw for the Golden Boys will also set up a date with the Eagles if Crystal Palace fail to win at Bramall Lane, providing Leeds United do not win by four clear goals at Preston North End.

The semi final will still see an Aidy Boothroyd versus Iain Dowie match-up should Watford lose at home to the Tigers, Preston North End defeat Leeds United and Crystal Palace win at Sheffield United.

Watford v Leeds United

Watford will play Leeds United if they gain at least a point against Hull City at Vicarage Road, should the Elland Road side lose at Preston North End and Crystal Palace win at Sheffield United.

Boothroyd's men will also face the Tykes should they lose at home to Hull City, Preston North End defeat Leeds United and Crystal Palace fail to win at Sheffield United.

Watford v Preston North End

Watford will play Preston North End if they beat Hull City, Leeds United win at Deepdale and Crystal Palace defeat Neil Warnock's Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

A draw or defeat for Watford against Peter Taylor's men will also see this scenario providing Leeds United defeat Preston North End by four clear goals and Crystal Palace fail to win at Sheffield United.

The remotest of possibilities is that Crystal Palace win by seven clear goals at Bramall Lane and Leeds United and Preston North End draw, which would also mean a clash with Billy Davies' men, irrespective of what happens to Watford in their clash with Hull City.

It all makes for an exciting final day of the season in a week's time, even if it is a nightmare for staff of the respective clubs trying to sought ticket and travel arrangements for the play-offs which commence just five days after the finish of the regular season.
