Watford are in negotiations with Rob Edwards over replacing Roy Hodgson as manager after Forest Green Rovers granted them permission to talk to their head coach, 90min understands.
The Hornets' long-anticipated relegation was confirmed following a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday and current boss Hodgson has already confirmed that he will stepping back into retirement at the end of the season.
The club had been in talks with former player John Eustace, who is currently assistant manager at Queens Park Rangers, over replacing the former England coach.
However, 90min understands that Edwards is now their main target. Edwards has steered Forest Green to the League Two title this season, with Rovers clinching top spot on goal difference following a drop off in form at the end of the campaign.
Prior to taking over at The New Lawn in 2021, Edwards had has spells at AFC Telford, on the Wolves coaching team and as England Under-16 manager. His playing career saw him take in time at Aston Villa, Wolves - where he made the majority of his appearances - Blackpool and Barnsley, before retiring in 2013.
90min understands that talks are ongoing between Edwards and Watford. Forest Green will not stand in his way having granted permission for negotiations to take place.
News of Edwards' potential departure comes a few days after Portsmouth tried and failed to prise director of football Richard Hughes away from The New Lawn.
