Young Figures As England Defeat Germany

Watford's Ashley Young made his second international appearance on Friday evening, replacing Arsenal's Theo Walcott as a 66th minute substitute to help Peter Taylor's young guns to a one goal victory over their German counterparts in the UEFA European Under 21 Championship Play-off First Leg at Coventry City's Ricoh Arena.

The game's winning goal, scored by Wigan Athletics' Leighton Baines on 77 minutes, was a spectacular effort from fully 25 yards and was just reward for an England side who had dominated for long periods, only to be thwarted by the brilliance of Germany goalkeeper, Michael Rensing.

Team: Scott Carson, Micah Richards, Leighton Baines, Steven Taylor, Anton Ferdinand, Tom Huddlestone, Nigel Reo-Coker (c), James Milner, Theo Walcott (Ashley Young 66), David Nugent, Wayne Routledge, (Gabriel Agbonlahor 71)

Subs not used: Justin Hoyte, Lee Camp, Matthew Kilgallon, Peter Whittingham.

The second leg takes place in Leverkusen on Tuesday evening, kick-off 8.15pm (7.15pm BST) and is to be shown LIVE on Sky Sports.
