Lee Mason Refs Charlton Game

Last updated : 17 October 2006 By Gary Holmes

The 34-year-old is rarely given an opportunity to referee top flight matches and indeed has only presided over one previous Premiership match this term, Reading's controversial away defeat to Aston Villa in the season's opening week when the Royals had Ibrahima Sonko sent off.

A glance further back in time shows the Lancashire born official last took charge of Watford in their odd goal in three come from behind victory away to Hull City on Guy Fawkes last year.

On that particular occasion the merry whistle blower did not brandish a card of any colour as goals by Gavin Mahon and Matthew Spring cancelled out Nicky Barmby's opener for the hosts.

Mason, who did officiate in any of Charlton Athletic's fixture last season, began refereeing in 1988 and progressed to the national list of assistant referees in 1998 before further progression saw him promoted to the Premier League list two years later.

Mr. Mason will be joined by Mr. J.Linington and Mr. K.Pike as his assistants at the Valley this weekend.
