Player Ratings v Bolton Wanderers

Last updated : 08 February 2007 By Gary Holmes

Ben Foster

Made a fine first half parry to deny Nicolas Anelka and generally sound. Normally commands his area so well, but was cleverly blocked by Bolton's forwards from Gary Speed's corner that led to the game's only goal, a tactic opponents are sure to try and exploit in upcoming matches.

Adrian Mariappa

Sound display at right back, and made a number of telling sorties forward especially in the second half. One such insertion saw him flash the ball agonisingly across the face of goal early in the second half.

Jordan Stewart

Defended well enough but his achilles heel, accurate passing deserted him once again disastrously.

Malkay Mackay

Defended stoutly in partnership with Jay DeMerit. Predictably looks vulnerable to searing pace but still reads the game so well, smells danger and invariably deals with it.

Jay DeMerit

Composed defensive performance from the American, who was left to launch long balls forward in desperate search of an equaliser late on.

Damien Francis

Another frustrating display from the £1m man. Showed glimpses of what he can do, but all too often leaves responsibility to others. At times looks very good, on other occasions lethargic and largely disinterested. Verdict remains out, but is sure to come under increasing pressure for his place following the arrival of Leicester City's Gareth Williams.

Hameur Bouazza

Surprisingly off the pace and control let him down badly a couple of times, especially when presented with a clear run on goal by Darius Henderson late in the first half. Not at his best, but team's goal threat subsided still further when he was substituted.

Gavin Mahon

Captain returned after injury and produced a typical combative display. Worked tirelessly to turn the tide, but passing, not necessarily a strong point was poor and epitomised an all round bad afternoon at the office.

Will Hoskins

Started brightly only to get caught up in the malaise. Wonderful deft touch early in the second half created an opening for Adrian Mariappa, but otherwise drifted out of the game. Early days, and must improve his first touch, although the former Rotherham United youngster stills shows plenty of promise.

Darius Henderson

Herculean effort from the big front man who just needs a goal. Always showed and held the ball up well, although a lack of serious top flight pace in the crucial areas is hindering his chances of ending goal drought.

Lee Williamson

Tough debut for the 24-year-old. Started on the right, and was switched to the left midway through the first half. Made one excellent run and did have a half chance as the interval approached that was well blocked, but this was a tough baptism. Not every side has the physical attributes Bolton have or are as good as big Sam's and hopefully his time will come.

Gareth Williams

Replaced Lee Williamson at the interval. Showed a nice touch on the ball but unsurprisingly given that he has just arrived at the club, failed to link up play in the way his manager and fans desperately wanted.

Anthony McNamee

No opportunity to get behind a rugged Bolton Wanderers rearguard after replacing an out of sorts, Hameur Bouazza. A little too lightweight in the hurly burly that is Bolton's trademark.

Steve Kabba

No magic from the ex-Sheffield United front man, but was not introduced at the best of times. History suggests he takes time to get fit and settle at a club, problem is Watford needs him to produce the goods right now!
