Shoot out at the Palace!

Last updated : 30 March 2006 By Dan Goldstone

Who will come out top on Friday night, when the Championship takes centre stage once more as third placed Watford travel to Selhurst Park to contest a shoot out with fifth placed Crystal Palace?

Both team's are firmly ensconced in the race for the Premiership and are indebted in part, to their strikers, all of whom have the ability to terrorise defenders at this level.

As part of the pre-match build up here at the Golden Boys we thought we would take a look at the relative strengths of both sets of strikers.

Marlon King and Darius Henderson have been instrumental for Watford this term, while Andrew (Andy, AJ) Johnson and Clinton Morrison have carried out a similar job for Crystal Palace as they bid to return to the Premiership at the first attempt.

Marlon King
The engaging King has proved a huge hit at Vicarage Road after spending the first half of the campaign on loan before joining permanently in January for £500k from Coca-Cola League One Outfit, Nottingham Forest.

His pacy strong running and never say die attitude is a joy to behold for supporters of a Golden persuasion and although defenders may not admit it, his all round game is a constant menace for them who must find him one of the most difficult to play against in the league.

Equally adept with right or left foot, King also likes to go out wide and come deep when necessity dictates in order to create goal scoring opportunities, and in this sense he can be compared favourably to Arsenal's Thierry Henry, fast, strong and creative with an eye for goal.

The Jamaican born King has netted 18 times so far, a record that sees him topping the division's goal scoring charts, and after a few seasons where he seemed to be losing his way Watford fans have been the beneficiaries of a startling return to form.

Striker partner, Henderson has been almost as impressive.

Nicknamed ‘Doris', Henderson scored against Preston North End on debut and netted twice after coming on to replace King in a narrow home defeat to Sheffield United prior to a niggling injury which sidelined him up until Christmas.

Darius Henderson
'Doris' returned to fitness and first team action on Boxing Day, marking his appearance with the first goal in a comfortable three goal win over the Saints and then glory be, the tall 6ft 1 striker struck gold early in the M1 derby at Luton Town to set up a never to be forgotten odd goal in three victory at Kenilworth Road in the first match of the New Year.

Henderson's form has continued to impress and doubles in the away victories at Norwich City and Southampton have helped him total 12 goals thus far, which in just 23 starts represents a fantastic return for a man who cost just £450k in an eye of the season transfer from Coca-Cola League One side, Gillingham.

Watford fans have taken to his physical and hard working approach to games and like his fellow strike partner, Henderson is as comfortable on the left or right, brings other players into the play and is a constant menace in the air.

The pair has formed a deadly partnership and compliments each other so well that it is easy to forget the contribution of Ashley Young and more recently, Chris Eagles.

Young has been a revelation this season, jinking runs on either wing providing telling crosses that have provided plenty of ammunition for the two strikers already mentioned together with a small matter of 13 goals into the bargain.

The embarrassment of riches at Aidy Boothroyd's disposal is completed by on loan Manchester United starlet, Chris Eagles. Although by his own admission not quite at his very best in the last couple of games defenders will need no reminding of his ability and goal scoring prowess, just ask Wayne Henderson the Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper who conceded from the half way line in a recent clash at the Withdean Stadium.

So Crystal Palace's defence which includes the talented Darren Ward and Fitz Hall will have to be on their game on Friday evening if they are to keep the Watford strike force out, and at the very least they can be sure of a busy and tricky night!

Andrew Johnson
Our hosts also possess quality in abundance up top with manager Ian Dowie choosing two smaller strikers in preference to a large small combination, and in Johnson, the genial boss has a player who has already appeared in a full international for England, the first Eagle to do so since Nigel Martyn in 1992.

‘AJ' joined Palace as Morrison left in 2002, forging a big reputation in the Championship and last season the Premiership where he scored 21 goals in a campaign that ultimately ended in disappointment and relegation.

Unsurprisingly Johnson was sought by many clubs during the summer transfer window, but debonair Chairman, Simon Jordan spurned all advances for his most prized asset, preferring to keep him as part of a concerted bid to return to the top flight of English football at the first attempt.

Jordan's confidence in the player has been repaid handsomely as AJ has fired in 14 goals thus far a return that has kept Palace in play-off contention throughout.

AJ is a real handful for defenders, loves playing on the last man, and is always looking for a through ball to run onto. Add immense pace, a prolific strike rate, and the ability to gain penalty verdicts, it is no wonder many pundits feel the player is plying his trade a division too low for his undoubted talents.

Clinton Morrison
Republic of Ireland international, Clinton Morrison, incidentally a Tooting born lad, returned to Selhurst Park three years after originally leaving in a big money transfer to Birmingham City.

After scoring in his second game at home to Hull City, Morrison has not looked back, and has mustered 12 goals this season in 28 appearances.

He has also formed a solid partnership with Johnson this season and down well enough to keep fellow strikers Dougie Freedman and Jon Macken keeping their heels which is a feat in itself.

Morrison also has a reputation for being a difficult striker to play against. The 26-year-old is adept at getting into the box, finds space easily behind the defence, wins his share in the air, and is constantly harrying and chasing the ball meaning most defences will never have an easy match against him.

It is sure to be a battle royal on Friday night and with Sky Sports' Live TV cameras also present it promises to be a fixture to capture the imagination of the nation.

Here at the Golden Boys we are hopeful that Watford's Malky Mackay and Jay DeMerit, so solid of late, will negate the Palace goal threat and that King and Henderson will prevail in the shoot-out at the Palace!

Predication: King and Henderson to come out on top and secure a 3-1 victory for the Golden Boys.
