Controversial Ref In Charge Of Selhurst Park Clash

The Football League has today announced that Mike Jones will take charge of the all important first leg of the Coca-Cola Play-off Semi-Final against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

The Cheshire based official will perhaps be best remembered for controversially showing red cards to two Watford players during a tempestuous odd goal in three Elland Road defeat against Leeds United on Valentine's Night.

On that particular evening the Golden Boys lost striker, Darius Henderson, goalkeeper Ben Foster and the match, after Ashley Young's spectacular first half free-kick opener.

Much earlier in the season the same whistle blower had presided over Watford's after extra time Carling Cup victory versus Wolverhampton Wanderers at Vicarage Road, which passed without incident.

The 38-year-old is a vastly experienced official who began refereeing as long ago as 1983, before progressing to the full referee's list in 1996, and he has since taken charge of a number of high profile matches including the LDV Vans Trophy Northern Area Final between Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday in 2004.

Mr. Jones will be joined by assistants, Mr. I.J Gosling and Mr. J.E Pearce at Selhurst Park.
