Aidy's View: Leeds United Play-off Final

Speaking in the aftermath of wonderfully joyous celebrations at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium a clearly delighted Watford manager said,

"I wanted to bring the players to the stadium beforehand because I wanted us to play the game and not the occasion.

I was hoping for eight players to perform emotionally and mentally on the day. Instead, I had 12 or 13 doing that."

Almost inevitably, the bookies are tipping Watford for an immediate return to the Championship, but the 35-year-old is already looking forward to defying the odds again next season.

"The best way to sum all this up is by saying that we are now a model for other clubs who don't have a great deal of money, but have good organisation, a fantastic work ethic, genuine hunger and a no fear attitude.

"We have shown that anything is possible. We'll take no fear attitude with us, and I know we'll be favourites to go down. I'm not bothered about that because we won't go down, I really believe that, but then I'm a bit weird.

I'm confident because if I start thinking about things like that, then that's exactly what's going to happen – it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. We'll enjoy our night, then we will make additions to the squad and we'll have a real go at it."

Looking ahead Boothroyd concluded,

"As for the future, I want to bring youth players through, have the best academy in the world, and sign players over the summer who are young and hungry.

When I first came in I knew we would get to the Premiership, but 14 months ago we were looking at survival and no more. The mentality has now changed among the players, the staff and in the town."
