Watford Danish international Allen Neilsen assured his side their first victory of the season when he grabbed a dramatic winner five minutes from time.

Watford, who had been leading for most of the match, had seen Wimbledon equalise a minute earlier. A quickly taken free-kick saw Mark Williams nod the ball through and Damien Francis, looking yards offside, poked in the equaliser.

While the action replay of the goal suggested the strike should have been disallowed, Watford swung into attack with keeper Alec Chamberlain making a long clearance upfield. Dominic Foley nodded the ball down and Tommy Smith laid it into the path Neilson who sent a left-foot shot from the edge of the box into the net, giving the keeper no chance.

The Dons had taken the lead in the first half against the run of play with Watford guilty of ball-watching as Adam Nowland broke clear to slot the ball beyond the keeper.

Watford equalised after 30 minutes with Neilson sending a long throw into the penalty area where first Chris Wilmott and then Williams flicked the ball across the area to set up Danny Webber to head home from close range.

With Neal Ardley teasing his former colleagues with a number of crosses it was not surprise when, from one of his centres, Paul Robinson rose to head Watford into the lead.

Watford continued to look the better side after the break before Wimbledon began to assert themselves. However the best the Dons could provide was a half hit Neil Shipperley shot on the turn which was easily saved
