Mackay felt the Hornets dominated the latest encounter and his players should be proud of their performances against the leaders.
"I said to the team in the dressing room, you look at the both games and, yes, we have been beaten in both," said Mackay.
"But in the first game at St James' Park we created a hell of a lot of chances and we deserved something from that game. I think most neutrals would say that."
