On This Day

Exactly six years ago the Golden Boys made their exit from English football's top flight after completing a narrow home victory over Gordon Strachan's Sky Blues.

Graham Taylor's side had begun the season reasonably well and three wins in their opening eight games, including memorable one goal victories away to Liverpool and at home to Chelsea during the first six weeks of the campaign, had proffered hope that the side could consolidate their promotion following the exciting Wembley Stadium play-off final success against Bolton Wanderers earlier in the year.

However, the onset of winter saw an alarming downturn in fortunes, and the side won only three further matches, including the last day Vicarage Road triumph over Coventry City on May 14 2000.

The Watford team that took to the field against Coventry City six years ago:

Day, Page, Palmer, Robinson, Mooney, Smith, Ward, Bonnot, Perpetuini, Cox (Gibbs, 51 mins), Helguson. Subs not used: Chamberlain, Easton, Gudmundsson, Foley.

Six years on and Watford, under the astute management of the engaging Aidy Boothroyd are on the brink of a return to the big time!

Come On!
