The King of Vicarage Road

As the ball floated over the onrushing Marlon Beresford in the 36th minute of Sunday's tense M1 local derby against fierce rivals, Luton Town you just knew it would drop unerringly under the cross bar and into his unguarded net.

Marlon King had scored and the eruption around the ground said it all.

“Marlon, Marlon, he is the King of Vicarage Road” the home crowd roared.

And he really is the King of Vicarage Road as that effort has seen him become the first Golden Boy to bag at least 20 league goals in a season since former great, Luther Blissett netted 21 during the 1984/85 campaign.

Speaking to the official site Watfordfc.com afterwards, the endearing King said,

"I didn't even know that was the case. It was nice to score but it would have been better had it been the winner.

"I'm happy with my goals this season but it could have been more.

"I've had one penalty saved and one has hit the post and there are plenty of other chances I could have taken.

"But, like everyone here, I'm learning all the time."

With a potential seven matches still left the talented King has every opportunity to surpass Blissett's figure, and what better way to do it than by grabbing a play-off winner to send the Golden Boys into the Premiership.
