The Thirteen Golden Boys Who Made It Happen

Last updated : 10 May 2006 By Gary Calder

Ben Foster

Ben Foster – Assured handling and positional sense in both games, showed just why he is so highly rated by Manchester United.

Lloyd Doyley

Lloyd Doyley – Combative as ever in the right back position, and always looked to get forward at every opportunity.

Jordan Stewart

Jordan Stewart – Much maligned throughout the season by a number of Golden Boys fans, but manager kept faith and the ex-Leicester City man repaid him with two outstanding performances.

Malky Mackay

Malky Mackay – The rock, on which the Semi-Final was won, negated the threat of Crystal Palace's dangerous front runners in both games as he bids for a third successive Coca-Cola Championship promotion.

Jay DeMerit

Jay DeMerit – Sterling performances in the heart of the defence both in South East London and at Vicarage Road, disappointing omission from USA World Cup squad.

James Chambers

James Chambers – Came back into the side at the expense of Chris Eagles and excelled on the right flank. Ran himself into the ground in both matches.

Matthew Spring

Matthew Spring - Back to his very best, scored the crucial third goal at Selhurst Park with a trademark strike, harried and hustled with great effect in the home leg at Vicarage Road.

Al Bangura

Al Bangura – 18-year-old who came of age in the two matches after replacing Darius Henderson during half time at Selhurst Park. Tackling, passing and vision was superb throughout.

Gavin Mahon

Gavin Mahon – Inspirational skipper who led from the front at both ends of the pitch. No better leader in the Championship.

Ashley Young

Ashley Young – Crucially like Matthew Spring, back to his very best for the play-offs. Scored a sublime free-kick in the first leg and ran his socks off in the second.

Marlon King

Marlon King – Watford's talisman, struck first at Selhurst Park, and a constant menace for the Crystal Palace defence who could never relax with him around. Surely destined for the Premiership!

Darius Henderson

Darius Henderson – Failed to make much of an impact in the first half at Selhurst Park, but always an outlet when arriving as a late substitute in the second leg at Vicarage Road. Willing worker.

Chris Eagles

Chris Eagles – Very much a bit part player who starred for just the last seven minutes at Selhurst Park, although during this short spell, the on loan Manchester United man showed glimpses of his outstanding potential.
