Thomas Frank wants Premier League gameweek cancelled amid Covid-19 spike

Brentford boss Thomas Frank wants this weekend's Premier League games to be cancelled following a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases.

The UK government reported over 78,000 positive cases on Wednesday - the highest number since the pandemic began - and a number of Premier League fixtures have been postponed recently due to several clubs reporting outbreaks in their squads.

Brentford are scheduled to face Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday before they host west London rivals Chelsea in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Frank, who confirmed that 13 players and staff at Brentford are currently in isolation due to positive tests, believes that football needs to be halted once again in order to 'break the chain' and contain these outbreaks.

“We think we should postpone the full round of Premier League games this weekend,” Frank said in a press conference on Thursday.

"Covid cases are going through the roof at all Premier League clubs, everyone is dealing with it and having problems.

“To postpone this round and also the Carabao Cup round would give everyone a week at least, or four or five days to clean and do everything at the training ground so everything is clean and you break the chain.”

Brentford have been without star players Ivan Toney and Ethan Pinnock recently due to positive Covid tests, but have taken four points from their last six available to them.

A 2-2 draw at Leeds was followed by a 2-1 win at home to Watford in which Brentford scored twice in the final ten minutes to turn the game around.
