He told the club's official website: "The last three years have been difficult to cope with. I've taken every possible step to try and regain full fitness.
"But it has become apparent recently that I was not going to re-establish the level of fitness needed in today's game.
I must give a massive thank you to the Watford fans. I will never forget the role they played in helping me through some difficult days."
